Netball is a dynamic sport reliant on the team to work cohesively and have a strong understanding of their positions roles and responsibilities. Each of the seven positions on court has a unique role in both attacking and defending. Knowing what each player does will help you appreciate the strategy behind this fast-paced sport and improve your own game.
GOAL SHOOTER (GS)
The Goal Shooter is one of only two players who can score goals. They spend most of their time in the goal circle trying to shoot goals.
Key Skills: Accurate shooting, strong catching, good balance, staying calm under pressure, and being able to jump high to receive passes and rebounds.
GOAL ATTACK (GA)
The Goal Attack also shoots goals and helps feed the ball to the Goal Shooter. They move around more than the Goal Shooter, working in both the goal circle and the middle of the court. Goal Attacks are like the link between the shooting players and the rest of the team.
Key Skills: Good shooting, accurate passing, quick footwork, dodging to get free from defenders, and timing their runs perfectly.
WING ATTACK (WA)
The Wing Attack’s main job is to feed into the shooters. They cover the attacking end of the court. They help start the attacking plays for their team.
Key Skills: Fast running, excellent passing, dodging skills, reading the game well, and communicating with teammates.
CENTRE (C)
The Centre is the only player who can go anywhere on the court except inside the goal circles. They’re like the team captain on court, helping to move the ball from defence to attack.
Key Skills: Great fitness and stamina, all-round passing skills, quick thinking, leadership, and being able to change direction quickly.
WING DEFENCE (WD)
The Wing Defence tries to stop the other team’s Wing Attack from getting the ball to their shooters. They work hard to intercept passes and put pressure on the attacking players.
Key Skills: Quick reactions, good anticipation, strong defensive footwork, intercepting passes, and staying focused on their opponent.
GOAL DEFENCE (GD)
The Goal Defence protects their goal circle and tries to stop the other team’s Goal Attack from shooting or passing easily. They work closely with the Goal Keeper to defend their goal and try to win the ball back for their team.
Key Skills: Strong defending, good jumping ability, blocking shots, rebounding, and working well as a team with the Goal Keeper.
GOAL KEEPER (GK)
The Goal Keeper is the last line of defence and stays mostly in the goal circle. Their main job is to stop the other team from scoring by blocking shots and catching rebounds.
Key Skills: Excellent jumping and reaching, strong hands for catching rebounds, good positioning, blocking shots, and staying calm when under pressure.
